Cesc Fabregas has told skysports.com that his first goal at Euro 2008 is to earn a place in Spain's starting XI.
The Arsenal midfielder is far from guaranteed a place in Luis Aragnoes' line-up with the likes of Xavi, Andres Iniesta, Marcos Senna and Xabi Alonso all competing for places.
The 21-year-old is pleased to be in Austria & Switzerland, but he wants to be able to make an impact from the start.
"To play in this tournament is a pleasure for any footballer," he told skysports.com.
"But my first success is to get into the team and then my mission is to help my team-mates achieve a big success."
Fabregas admits Spain are hoping to win a major tournament for the first time since 1964, but he acknowledges that they face a tough task to get through the group stages.
"It is only logical that our dream is to finish as champions, but I think there will be a tremendous fight in the groups and we can only think of each match as it comes.
"The challenge for Spain is obviously to get past the quarter-final stage and it will be wonderful to break that."
Cesc is in confident mood and says the rest of the squad is of a similar mindset.
"Our squad is in unison, it is a blend of men and younger ones, our potential is as big as it is has ever been but we have to fulfil this on the pitch," he added.
"The players are totally concentrated but we are not going to go on about our chances."
On Spain's hopes, Fabregas does admit that Spain are one of the favourites to lift the Henri Delaunay Trophy.
"I do include Spain as one of the favourites, but if you analyse the statistics there is always Germany, Italy, France, Holland and Portugal as options," he concluded.
Spain kick-off their campaign against Russia next Tuesday.
