Fabregas lifts Euro 2008 Trophy

Fabregas backs Gallas
Monday, May 12, 2008

Cesc Fabregas is convinced Arsenal will win a trophy next season - and he has backed William Gallas as the right captain to lift it.

Fabregas, 21 next week, has been tipped as a future skipper because of his maturity, a quality acknowledged by his peers at the weekend when he was declared the Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the Year.

Gallas, meanwhile, has had his leadership under scrutiny since his bizarre reaction to Arsenal conceding a last-gasp penalty at Birmingham.

That result has been part of a collapse during the second half of the campaign meaning Arsenal will go three seasons without a trophy, the last being when Patrick Vieira lifted the FA Cup in 2005 after scoring the winning penalty.

Finishing the season empty-handed does not necessarily mean there should be a change in captain, according to Fabregas.

The midfielder may be seen as a captain later in his career, but he said: 'I don't know. This is not in my hands, it is the boss that decides that.

'You have to respect William for what he has done in football and what he is doing now, for me he is doing a good job.

'For me, the most important thing is giving everything on the pitch - that is what really matters to me.'

Fabregas is determined to add a trophy with Arsenal next season to the personal award he received in London at the Grosvenor House Hotel.

'To win a personal award reflects the season we have had as a team,' he added. 'Everyone said that it is disappointing not to win anything but we have made a big step forward in experience, physically and mentally.

'One of us deserved to win something because we played some very good football.

'What matters at the end of the day is a trophy. We didn't win one this season but we will be up for it next season. I think we will win something, of course.'

The Spain international also paid tribute to boss Arsene Wenger and the influence the Frenchman has had on his career.

'I've always said that I'm grateful for what he did for me and what he is still doing for me and this club,' Fabregas said.

'He has great scouts around the world watching and he is intuitive about his players. He has the smell for who will become a very good player and a good person.'

Fabregas voted for Cristiano Ronaldo, who won the player of the year award.

The Arsenal midfielder hopes he is in the running in 12 months time to be in the running for both awards again - but winning something with his club is what matters most.

'I will try,' he said. 'First of all I would like to win the league and if we win the league I would love to be in his position.'
